Dragon Ball Z is a Japanese anime series created by Akira Toriyama. It follows the adventures of Son Goku from his childhood through adulthood as he trains in martial arts and explores the world in search of the seven mystical orbs known as Dragon Balls, which can summon a wish-granting dragon when gathered. Along his journey, Goku becomes friends with many characters and trains under various masters, both to learn new techniques and for self-defense. He defeats many villains, most notably Vegeta, who attempts to kill him in retaliation for defeating Frieza. The series is known for its anime style and dramatic plot developments, which often come in the form of "power shifts", in which one character gains new abilities or loses old ones. Many of Goku's foes are his future incarnations who continue to seek revenge for their defeat by him. The series was adapted into manga and anime with over 2,000 episodes. Dragon Ball has since spawned numerous spin-off series, merchandise, video games and a fan-base referred to as "Dragon Ball Z" fans. The franchise has also gained great international success which surpassed $5 billion USD in merchandise sales worldwide in 2011. For many years, there was no English-dubbed version of Dragon Ball Z or Dragon Ball Kai, the Japanese-dubbed version of the series. Saban Entertainment produced an English-dubbed version which aired on Cartoon Network from September 6, 2003 to July 9, 2006. It was broadcast along with the Japanese dub on Toonami in 2005 and Toonami in 2006, but did not replace them for that time slot after Toonami ended its run. The English dub was produced by Funimation Entertainment and aired on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim block from November 4, 2005 to January 31, 2009. In December 2009, FUNimation announced that they will begin releasing wide-scale Dragon Ball Z media, starting with the first season of the subtitled "Dragon Box" DVD sets starting on January 26, 2010. The first set of the complete dub of DBZ was released on February 2, 2011. On March 16, 2015, FUNimation started a new English dub of Dragon Ball Z Kai on Toonami's replacement block, Adult Swim's Toonami Block. The new dub started airing from April 3 to 9, 2015 and will continue to air each Saturday as part of Toonami's hour long programming block. Dragon Ball Z was broadcast on Cartoon Network in the United States between 2003 and 2006, replacing Toonami. The first two seasons premiered at 3:00pm ET/PT, the third season at 4:00pm ET/PT, and the fourth season at 5:00pm ET/PT. The English dub was produced by FUNimation Entertainment. Like other FUNimation-acquired anime series, Dragon Ball Z began airing on Adult Swim's adult division Toonami block starting April 3rd 2015. cfa1e77820
